Reece Pocock has written an authoritative and intimate story of two families brought together by war and peace; in the process, he creates a fine study of how ordinary people are swept along by political and military events over which they have no control but which continue to colour their daily lives.
In North Africa in the 1940s, two men – Bill, an Australian and Rolf, a German – confront each other in a one-to-one fight in the vicious battles around Tobruk. Both are forever scared physically and mentally. Later, when Rolf is fighting in Italy, he learns of the Dresden fire bombing, deserts and returns home to find his family dead or dying. Rolf flees Germany and takes the identity of a dead companion, winding up in a displaced persons camp in France, from where he eventually migrates to Australia. The Australians meanwhile are withdrawn from North Africa and fight in the Pacific. In Papua-New Guinea, Bill is exposed to the horrors of jungle warfare and is invalided out of the army.
Five years after the War, Bill and Rolf meet each other by chance in Australia without knowing who the other is, and strike up a working relationship. Some of the locals resent the arrival of German migrants and Rolf is the subject of abuse and violence. When Rolf and Bill’s sister Elaine fall in love, family resistance is strengthened. Rolf eventually realises that it was Bill who wounded him in North Africa and must decide whether to forgive and forget or whether to seek revenge.
Pocock evokes powerful imagery of the viciousness of war in both the desert and the jungle as well as convincingly portraying how men respond under enormous stress.
Wendy Jarrett never thought she’d meet the man of her dreams at a funeral. But when an old boyfriend of her mother’s dies, Wendy accompanies her to the beach resort of Cape May, New Jersey for the service. There she meets Adam Lewis, nephew of the deceased, who is tall, gorgeous, and available.
Everything seems to be going right for Wendy, until everything starts turning against her. While Adam is undeniably attractive, he is possibly the least romantic person in the world. Wendy then finds out that the dead man’s estate includes an ugly old Victorian house in Cape May–and that dead man’s will leaves the house to her overbearing mother instead of Adam, the rightful heir. Wendy is also being pursued by a jealous former classmate who is intent on making her life miserable.
Wendy decides to take charge of the situation, and drives down to Cape May to figure out exactly why Adam’s crazy Uncle Sheldon left the house to Wendy’s mother instead of Adam. What she finds there will either set her life on a new trajectory or cause her to miss out on her chance at true love.
As the cleansing fires of Beltain burned and the villagers danced, Maere cu Llwyr witnessed the garrote murder of her parents at the hands of her father’s brother. Born with the triple signs of the goddess, legend tells that whoever shares Maere’s bed first will also share her healing power – and her uncle, Eugis, has vowed it will be he. With her mother and father out of his way, he hides Maere in a convent with plans to retrieve – and bed her – on her eighteenth birthday.
Maere carries no memory of the horrific events of that Beltain night. All she knows of her childhood is contained in remnants of dreams and a growing ability to heal through touch. Fearing she’ll be punished for this power, she hides herself away from the scrutiny of the nuns, determined to discover the secrets of her past so she might better understand the present and where her future lies.
Dylan mac Connall, betrothed of the girl Maere, never forgot that bloody night when he saw his own father murdered as well. Having escaped capture by Eugis’ men, he grows to adulthood under the tutelage of an old woman who helps him discover his own magic. But the magic does not appease his soul and he becomes consumed with hatred and plots of revenge against Eugis, becoming determined it will be he who takes Maere first.
But when Dylan enters the abbey and discovers the woman Maere has become, he finds himself taking on the role of protector when Eugis – aided by the goddess Morrigu and the Viking forces surrounding their lands – makes good on his promise and returns for Maere, setting off a series of events which can only be resolved with one of their deaths.

THE FOLK & FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM (German: Kinder- und Hausmärchen – Vollstämdige Ausgabe) is a collection of German fairy tales first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The collection is commonly known in English as Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence. Among those influenced were the Russian Alexander Afanasyev, the Norwegians Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, the English Joseph Jacobs, and Jeremiah Curtin, an American who collected Irish tales. There was not always a pleased reaction to their collection. Joseph Jacobs was in part inspired by his complaint that English children did not read English fairy tales; in his own words, “What Perrault began, the Grimms completed.”
